RUSSELL SCOTT
Coach Russell Scott is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of Excel Basketball Inc., where he serves as the Head Coach for the Excel 9th Grade Girls team. After relocating to North Carolina in 2006, Coach Scott established Excel Basketball Training, successfully mentoring young players from 3rd grade through high school in Alamance County and the surrounding areas.
With over 20 years of coaching experience at the youth girls’ recreation level, Coach Scott has led teams to notable achievements, including SWAC State Championships in the Mite Girls Recreation League in both 2014 and 2015, as well as a SWAC Regional Championship in 2016.
Hailing from Connecticut, a state known for its strong girls' basketball programs, Coach Scott recognized the need to create a positive and competitive environment for young female athletes in Alamance County. As a father of two daughters, he observed a disparity in basketball resources available to girls compared to boys. In response, he and his close friend and coaching partner, Lindsay Harris, founded Excel Basketball Inc. in 2015 to share their knowledge and foster the growth of young girls in the community.
Coach Scott firmly believes in the philosophy, “It’s Not Who You Play…It’s How You Play.” He emphasizes that while obstacles may arise, it is the perseverance and determination to overcome them that truly matters. The goal of the Excel program is to utilize competitive basketball as a platform to teach valuable life skills such as teamwork, self-confidence, accountability, and resilience.
At Excel, Coach Scott is dedicated to helping as many girls as possible achieve their dreams of playing at the next level while earning a college degree without the burden of significant student loan debt. Last season marked a significant milestone for the program, as three of our eligible seniors received scholarship offers to continue their athletic careers in college.
As a distinguished former athlete, Coach Scott was a four-year scholarship player at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell from 1995 to 1999, serving as co-captain during his senior season. In November 2024, he will be honored with induction into the Windsor High School Athletics Hall of Fame in Windsor, CT, where he is one of only two players in school history to score over 1,000 points and grab more than 1,000 rebounds during his high school career.
Currently, Coach Scott also serves as an Assistant Coach for the Turrentine Middle School Girls Basketball team, a role he has held for the past three years.
